CIRCULAR COIL ON A BASE

  • When a current passes through a circular coil, it produces a magnetic field.
  • Our apparatus consists of a 1mm diameter Copper wire, which is mounted on a plastic base and is wound around the same into a coil with 94 turns.
  • A plastic sheet passes through the centre of this coil.
  • The entire set up is mounted on a wooden base.

To understand the nature of the magnetic field produced by a circular current carrying coil:

  1. This coil can be used with classical iron fillings for magnetic field pattern study and
  2. Also with a compass to see the magnetic effect of current, similar to a tangent galvanometer.

Therefore students can correlate the visual presentations obtained, with the right hand rule, to determine the magnetic field at the centre of the coil.
