VAN DE GRAAFF GENERATOR-HAND DRIVEN

  • This instrument is especially designed for use in the classroom to demonstrate the conversion of mechanical to electrical energy, and to show whether or not crank speed affects spark production.
  • This hand driven model does not require electric power.
  • It is supplied on a base
  • The generator is self exiting and charge separation occurs.
  • A metal sphere with a diameter of 150mm surrounds the upper pulley and charge accumulates on the sphere, which is insulated by a plastic column supporting the pulley assembly.
  • One can control the speed with the hand crank.
  • Includes the discharging sphere and instructions.
  • With this device, students will get a clear picture about the operating principle of a van de graaff generator, wherein the rubber belt driven by the pulley acquires a positive charge which it transfers to the outer surface of the dome that gets an increasingly positive charge in respect to earth. This ‘charge pumping’ effect is cumulative until a voltage on the large dome is sufficient to cause a spark discharge between the dome and the discharge ball.
