AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM MODEL

  • This model depicts the autonomic nervous system (ANS) innervation to various internal organs like the eye, heart, digestive system, lungs, various glands, kidneys, sex organs, etc.
  • ANS functions include control of respiration, cardiac regulation (the cardiac control center), vasomotor activity (the vasomotor center), and certain reflex actions such as coughing, sneezing, swallowing and vomiting.
  • ANS has 2 branches: the sympathetic (fight or flight system) and the parasympathetic nervous system.
  • The sympathetic division emerges from the spinal cord in the thoracic and lumbar areas, terminating around L2-3. The parasympathetic division has a craniosacral “outflow.
  • The model is mounted on a baseboard and numbered with an English key card.
